Nature of Mutation

The AGBL1 protein is proposed to have several functions including binding, metal ion binding, metallopeptidase activity, metallocarboxypeptidase activity, zinc ion binding (1).  Mutations in AGBL1 are associated with with migraine (2) and schizophrenia (3). It has been proposed that AGBL1 is involved in an anti-CMV IgG response (4) via catalyzing the deglutamylation of polyglutamate chains on tubulin.  AGBL1-mediated processing of tubublin could function in regulating the nuclear targeting of the CMV capsid in endothelial cells or in the differentiation of monocytes (where CMV is quiescent) to macrophages (4). Linkage has also been noted for SNPs in AGBL1 and carotid plaque in Dominican families (1).
