The encoded protein is a secreted sulfated glycoprotein and functions as a growth factor for primitive hematopoietic progenitor cells. PHENOTYPE: Mice homozygous for a knock-out allele exhibit decreased bone volume in limb bones and vertebrae, reduced bone strength, and delayed fracture healing. Bone marrow stromal cells display impaired osteogenic differentiation. [provided by MGI curators]
