This protein functions as a receptor for bile acids, and when bound to bile acids, binds to DNA and regulates the expression of genes involved in bile acid synthesis and transport. PHENOTYPE: Mice homozygous for knock-out alleles exhibit increased bile salts and abnormal liver morphology and physiology. Mice homozygous for one knock-out allele also exhibit abnormal lipid homeostasis. [provided by MGI curators]
