This gene is a candidate for Down syndrome and congenital heart disease (DSCHD). A gene encoding a similar Ig-CAM protein is located on chromosome 11. Alternatively spliced transcript variants encoding multiple isoforms have been observed for this gene. Protein Function and Prediction |
Dscam is a neural cell adhesion immunoglobulin (1). Yamakawa et al. propose that Dscam functions in neural differentiation (1). Further studies determined that Dscam is required for axon pathway formation in the embryonic central nervous system (2).

Expression/Localization |
In humans, DSCAM produces three transcripts that expressed primarily in the brain (1). In the mouse, Dscam is expressed in the nervous system and during neuronal differentiation it is in the neural tube, cortex, hippocampus, medulla, spinal cord and most neural crest-derived tissues (1).
