The olfactory receptor proteins are members of a large family of G-protein-coupled receptors (GPCR) arising from single coding-exon genes. Olfactory receptors share a 7-transmembrane domain structure with many neurotransmitter and hormone receptors and are responsible for the recognition and G protein-mediated transduction of odorant signals. The olfactory receptor gene family is the largest in the genome. The nomenclature assigned to the olfactory receptor genes and proteins for this organism is independent of other organisms. Nature of Mutation
DNA sequencing using the SOLiD technique identified an A to G transition at position 652 of the Olfr790 transcript. The mutated nucleotide causes a threonine to alanine substitution at amino acid 218 of the encoded protein. The mutation has been confirmed by DNA sequencing using the Sanger method (Figure 1).
Protein Function and Prediction

The Olfr790 gene encodes the 322 amino acid olfactory receptor 790. Olfactory receptors are G-protein coupled receptors (GPCRs) and usually contain seven transmembrane domains (Uniprot Q8VGJ3).

The T218A change is predicted to be benign by the PolyPhen program (see report).
