This summary is for the human ortholog.] This gene encodes one of the five subunits of the slowly inactivating L-type voltage-dependent calcium channel in skeletal muscle cells. Mutations in this gene have been associated with hypokalemic periodic paralysis, thyrotoxic periodic paralysis and malignant hyperthermia susceptibility. [provided by RefSeq, Jul 2008]
PHENOTYPE: Homozygous mutants show edema and failure of myoblast differentiation by day 13 of embryonic development and die perinatally. All muscles degenerate and additional secondary anomalies of the skeleton, short jaw, and cleft palate are seen. [provided by MGI curators]
