This gene likely functions as a trigger for apoptosis through expression of genes necessary for cell death. Translocation of this gene with the MLL gene is associated with secondary acute leukemia. PHENOTYPE: Inactivation of the locus results in an ovarian defect involving follicular growth activation and leads progressively to female sterility. For some alleles defects in immune system function and hematopoiesis have also been reported. [provided by MGI curators]
