The active form of the protein is found extracellularly as a disulfide-linked homodimer, and is thought to be produced by proteolytic cleavage of membrane-bound precursors. PHENOTYPE: Homozygotes for a spontaneous mutation exhibit lack of incisors, a broad domed skull, short thick limb bones with reduced marrow cavities, impaired hearing and vision, and reduced fertility in females. [provided by MGI curators]
